Public Audition (TBA live) 2000

In Public Audition (to be announced live) every member of the audience participates in a staged casting call for music video dancers. Audience members are provided with a seating map dividing the space into different audition categories. They are advised to sit in the group they are prepared to audition within, such as Support or Waltz. The dancers/audience are seen projected celebrity scale on the wall directly in front of the stage via a video camera I wear attached to a backpack. The room heats up quickly due to the excessive amount of bright lights, the frantic pace and the repeated efforts of the auditioners. Eventually everything gets synced to music. When Public Audition was performed in Germany (these photos) I used Nena's 99 Luftballons. After making the music video, all sound and lighting is suddenly cut and the concept of 15 minutes of fame comes to a sudden halt. I end the performance by handing out business cards with my signature, urging the auditioners to contact me if they want to discuss their audition.
