Ballet
Aquatique 2001/03

Ballet Aquatique was a 10 minute synchronized swimming performance made in an outdoor, public pool for Ladyfest Midwest. The performance was meant as a sports event half time show/guerilla attack on the pool during the lifeguard breaks when the pool was empty. This entire summer was incredibly hot and the pool was filled and surrounded by excited kids, but on the performance day the temperature dropped considerably and the pool was closed due to thunder and lightning storms. So Ballet Aquatique was a guerilla attack on an already empty pool, without the intended audience of poolgoers being rowdy and rambunctious around the edges. As a result, the piece took on a much more serious and melancholic quality. Ballet Aquatique was a collaboration with Jeff Fisher, who created the sound track. The top two images are from sunny rehearsal days, the bottom two were taken on the performance day. The audience was watching from the second floor of the field house. |
