AUDITION! 2001

I placed an advertisement in the local paper in Chicago to audition people to work with in an upcoming performance I was making. The auditions were held as part of the Spare Room Gallery show Dance Lessons. AUDITION! is the performance and video result. Upon arriving at the show, people were given a number and asked to wait until they were called out to the street. On the street outside the gallery I placed a row of lights to act as "stage front". The auditioners were instructed to perform two simple moves from the opposite side of a very wide, busy street towards "stage front". The street that people traversed was similar to most streets in Chicago; it was very long and straight. Therefore the traffic went very fast in a straight line. Auditioners were asked to use their best judgment in determaining varying speeds of velocity. People walked up off the streets and asked if they could take part, some came as a result of the advert in the paper, while others were implicated after arriving for the gallery vernissage.
