A Musical 2003
I often think about mapping space with one's body and I wanted to incorporate travel paths into something more than ephemeral ways of getting between two points. I printed out a bunch of metro maps and started looking at each line as a person traversing space. I was also interested in bringing an underground transportation system above ground as an idea of creating more open space in an urban environment. I thought this could metaphorically be read as: underground + above ground = double the space. At the same time I was invited to make a piece of work for The Spare Room in Chicago, a gallery that had recently relocated to a Puerto Rican neighborhood. I immediately thought of "West Side Story" and wanted to make a performance loosely drawing from the musical genre as a way for the gallery to be more visible to it's new neighborhood. The street out front the gallery provided a perfect setting; the street lights and the head lights of the passing cars provided the lighting. Often during rehearsals people filling their cars at the petrol stations would try to join into the choreography. The music for the performance was provided by 3 cassette radios held above the audience. "Special lighting effects" were created by audience members viewing through film lighting gels.
